Borders Railway to Hawick and Carlisle: time for a date, not more studies

Work on extending the Borders Railway from Tweedbank to Hawick and Carlisle has moved to the strategic outline business case stage, backed through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.

Hawick has been without a railway since 1969. The Borders Railway to Tweedbank has shown how many people will use a train when there is one. Taking it on to Carlisle would reconnect the central Borders with England and the west coast main line.

The Scottish Greens’ 2026 manifesto commits to making the case for Tweedbank to Carlisle via Hawick, and to exploring a new station at Hawick. We want both governments to agree a construction date, not just commission more studies.
