Laura Moodie, the newly-elected Scottish Greens MSP for South Scotland, has raised concerns in the Scottish Parliament over the early finish time of evening bus services connecting Edinburgh to the Borders.
Speaking in the chamber on September 10, Laura highlighted the impact of the current timetable on local residents, workers, and businesses along Borders Buses’ X62 route:
The last X62 service from Edinburgh to Penicuik, Peebles and Galashiels currently leaves Edinburgh just before 10pm and, for these communities, the time of the last bus restricts what they can do and how late they can stay at local venues.
“What assessment has the Scottish Government made of the adverse impact of limited evening bus services on the rural economy, particularly the hospitality and creative sectors?”
Responding for the Scottish Government, Minister Tom Arthur acknowledged the challenge, agreeing that the issue spans both transport infrastructure and broader economic health for sectors like hospitality, though he stopped short of committing to a formal assessment or specific action.
Following the exchange, Laura emphasised why expanding rural public transport links remains a priority for the Scottish Greens:
Reliable evening transport is vital for people living in rural communities.
“Towns such as Penicuik, Peebles and Galashiels have thriving cultural and hospitality sectors that contribute significantly to the local economy. Limited evening services can discourage visitors, reduce spending in local businesses and make it harder for workers to access employment opportunities.
“Improving public transport links is essential if we want to support rural economies, reduce car dependency and ensure that people in rural areas can enjoy the same opportunities as those living in larger urban areas.”
Scottish Borders Greens will continue to push for connected, frequent, and accessible public transport across the Borders.
