SCOTTISH BORDERS GREENS MANIFESTO FOR A BETTER BORDERS 2017
We can reduce waste and save money on landfill tax by increasing kerb side recycling and local recycling facilities, establish zero waste champions in our communities and increase support to local community based projects that promote zero waste.
We can reduce the impact of high energy costs on the council budget, create employment and help meet climate change targets with an ambitious project to produce our own energy using a mixture of renewable and waste to energy projects.
We can commit to keeping local healthcare services open for all. We can improve our children’s future by investing in preventative health and mental health care programmes within our schools. We can commit to improving social inclusion and accessibility across the region.
We can improve our public transport by using Community Transport initiatives to increase accessibility and uptake of public transport across the Borders. We can introduce ‘hopper tickets’ or a touch card service on public transport to increase uptake. We can increase provision of charging points for electric vehicles.
We can introduce 20mph zones in our built up and residential areas to reduce accidents on our roads and ease congestion in our busier areas.
We can and must recruit more teaching staff to fill all posts within our schools. We can improve the future health and happiness of our children with a greater emphasis on the teaching of life skills in our schools.
BUSINESS & EMPLOYMENT
We can fill our empty high street units by offering incentives to local small businesses and social enterprises where they also meet our aims of reducing waste, reducing poverty or improving accessibility and social inclusion. We can increase support to small businesses to provide good quality apprenticeships.
PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT
We can give local people a better say in how land is developed in their communities.
We can divest Scottish Borders Council funds from fossil fuels.
WE CAN CREATE A BETTER BORDERS FOR ALL.
