Renewables now generate more than all of Scotland’s electricity needs

New figures show that in 2022, renewable sources generated the equivalent of 113% of Scotland’s own electricity consumption. It is the first time the figure has passed 100%.

It’s a milestone worth celebrating, and it matters here in the Borders. Scotland already produces more clean electricity than it uses. The question now is who benefits from it.

Borders households are still struggling with high energy bills, and communities hosting turbines and power lines too often see little in return. Scottish Borders Greens want energy that is generated locally, owned locally and used to cut bills locally, not a countryside turned over to infrastructure built mainly for export.
