Like many councils across Scotland, Scottish Borders Council still uses the weedkiller glyphosate on pavements, verges and parks.
Our councillor for Galashiels and District, Neil MacKinnon, proposed iearlier this year that the council ban these chemicals. As a result of his motion, a pilot is running this summer on two routes into Galashiels.
While the council should be applauded for the large reduction in usage over the last few years (down by two thirds since 2021), further steps need to be taken to reduce the usage of these dangerous chemicals and eventually eliminate their use. On Melrose Road, the weeds will be managed without the use of these chemicals, while Abbotsford Road will continue to be treated with weedkiller.”
